+ About this map
Bigelow Mountain is the high point of Maine’s Bigelow Range, a long east-west ridge in the Longfellow Mountains that tops out at 4,145 feet on West Peak. The Appalachian Trail runs the length of the crest, and Flagstaff Lake fills the broad valley directly to the north. It is one of the last big climbs on the trail before Katahdin.
This map traces the spine of the range. The contour lines run in tight parallel bands along the north side, where the ridge drops steeply toward the lakeshore, and open more gradually to the south. West Peak and its twin summit, Avery Peak, appear as two closely spaced knots on the crest joined by a short high col. The map runs from about 1,250 feet near the lake up to the 4,145-foot summit, close to 3,000 feet of relief between water and ridge.
