+ About this map
Kit Carson Peak rises to 14,171 feet in Colorado’s Sangre de Cristo Range, a rugged summit above the town of Crestone. Its standard route follows Kit Carson Avenue, a wide natural ledge that cuts across the upper mountain, and most people climb it with Challenger Point, the western summit of the same massif. The Willow Lake basin lies below to the north.
This map traces the full width of the Kit Carson massif. The contour lines stack tightly on the north side above Willow Lake, and the summit ridge runs west to Challenger Point as a narrow, continuous crest. Crestone Peak, the highest ground on the sheet, stands across the drainage to the southeast. The elevation on this map runs from about 10,350 feet to just over 14,300 feet, and the steepest terrain is concentrated around the summits.
