+ About this map
Mount Yale rises to 14,200 feet in Colorado’s Sawatch Range, one of the Collegiate Peaks that line the west side of the Arkansas Valley above Buena Vista. It is the closest of the group to town, standing directly above Middle Cottonwood Creek and the road to Cottonwood Pass, and the standard route from Denny Creek is one of the more popular fourteener hikes in the range.
This map traces a mountain with a sharp, rocky summit set on a broad base. The contour lines fan out in long ridges to the east and southeast toward the valley, with the drainage of Denny Creek cut into the southwest side and Delaney Gulch on the east. The north face is the steepest, drawn as a tight band above the North Cottonwood Creek valley. Within this frame the terrain covers nearly 4,900 feet, a large span for a Sawatch peak, because the frame reaches down toward the valley floor where the mountain begins.
